Ever Wanted to Produce Your Own Coin?
It’s often more complex than it seems—but Beaverworks is here to guide you every step of the way.
Starting with intellectual property considerations, we help ensure your designs are fully cleared for use on your coin. Once that’s confirmed, the process typically follows these stages:
-
2D Illustrated Mock-Up: We create a basic design concept for your approval.
-
3D Sculpt: Once the 2D design is approved, we develop a detailed 3D model.
-
Die Fabrication: Using specialized steel, we process, heat-treat, and polish the dies to a mirror finish.
-
Engraving: We engrave your design onto the dies with precision.
-
Cleaning & Electroplating: The dies are thoroughly cleaned and electroplated to harden and protect the surface, ensuring sharp, long-lasting strikes.
-
Striking: Your coins are struck using the finished dies.
-
Finishing Touches: We can add select plating, full-color printing, serialized edge markings, or other custom features.
Beyond minting, we also provide packaging solutions—everything from simple acrylic capsules and custom coin slabs to fully bespoke display boxes designed to showcase your coins perfectly.
With extensive experience covering the entire process, Beaverworks is your trusted partner in bringing your coin vision to life.
Intellectual Property Considerations in Coin Design
Intellectual property is a critical area to navigate when producing coins. For example, a coin design featuring the late Sovereign of Canada, Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, requires permission from multiple authorities before use.
As we are not an official sovereign mint—such as the Royal Canadian Mint, which holds the exclusive designation of a national mint—our use of such imagery is likely not approved. This is because it could potentially infringe on intellectual property rights and blur the line between officially recognized currency issued by a sovereign mint and privately produced medallion rounds.
Careful attention must be paid to these distinctions to ensure all designs comply with applicable laws and permissions.

For this reason, we share this image purely as an example of a design that most likely would not receive official approval.
The last thing you want is to draw unwanted attention from authorities. We speak from direct experience—when we first started, our bank froze our accounts because their anti-counterfeiting division wanted to investigate. Our RCAF medallion rounds were intentionally designed to closely resemble official currency without being official. We had to provide contracts proving we held the necessary permissions to commercially reproduce government-protected markings.
Attracting law enforcement scrutiny in this field is the absolute last outcome you want.
This is where we can provide valuable consulting on how to navigate legal boundaries—what likely violates laws and what doesn’t. After the long and complex journey we’ve endured to reach this point, we will never be involved in producing or contributing to any work that infringes laws or could be considered counterfeiting. It’s far better to pursue a path of inspiration and excellence than to risk doing something wrong.
With that in mind, we can help develop your concept design and guide it toward a successful, legally compliant outcome. The first essential step is creating a concept design in a professional graphics environment, such as Adobe Illustrator.
