An Exceptionally Proud Grandson

We gifted him two coins

We had the rare opportunity to speak with the grandson of J.A.D. McCurdy several years ago when we began work on the Silver Dart coin. The conversation was a true pleasure—his recollections of his grandfather, one of the key pioneers in Canadian aviation and a foundational figure in the creation of the Royal Canadian Air Force, were captivating. We could have listened to him speak all day.

It was our distinct honour and immense privilege to produce a coin that pays tribute to such a monumental figure in Canadian aerospace history. At his request, we proudly included the phrase: “First Man to Fly in the British Empire”—a line we were more than happy to honour.

The Silver Dart

And the man who helped form the RCAF

We even made sure to use the correct crown of His Majesty King George VI, with permission, in keeping with the time period when McCurdy flew for the first time—anywhere in the British Empire.

When Canadian artist Joe Green decided to embark on producing the 100 Collection, the first coin Beaverworks Mint produced after the Arrow was one dedicated to this brave pioneer of Canadian aerospace innovation: J.A.D. McCurdy and his Silver Dart aircraft.

“This Canadian was the first man who ever flew in the entire British Empire and founded the Royal Canadian Air Force”

A man like this, without a doubt, deserves our absolute best work.
