The Spitfire Misprint
Chis Ball was an avionics guru who was the side kick to legendary Canadian aerospace icon, Robert “Bob” Diemert and the aerospace mentor for Green. Chris Ball was a legendary instrumentation tech who could rebuild any type of analog instrument for aircraft. He was the one who pointed out we used the wrong variant of Spitfire for the Battle of Britain as shown on the coin. It was a profoundly embarrassing mistake. When Green went out to visit Bob in Carmen, Manitoba, it was shortly after Chris passed away and he brought all the remaining misprints with him and decided to give them away to a number of Chris’ friends in his memory. With a handshake and a smile, Green said as he presented each one, “This is in memory of Chris Ball.” Only 100 were minted with this small flaw.
To the friend I never met, rest in peace. God Speed.
